The weather might not be as warm as we'd like, but the signs are everywhere. Crocus is blooming, daffodils are pushing up through the ground, and even the forsythia has buds. It's almost as if we're coming back to life. There's been no mistaking the liveliness of past meetings, however. Programs are doing an incredible job! Our February Valentine's Day party was a decadent success, and all in attendance in March had great fun learning some fabulous gift wrapping techniques. Our upcoming events promise to be equally as entertaining and enjoyable.

In April we will be hosting a digital camera workshop and slide show. If you're like me, you get shadows in all the wrong places, or your action shots are a bit on the blurry side. Bring your digital camera to our next meeting, and soon you'll be shooting like a pro! Our elections will also be held in April If you're interested in a board position, please let me know as soon as possible. Thanks to your nomination and overwhelming show of support, I will indeed be running again, as will some of our current board members. Once all of our nominees have been confirmed or denied, I will send a comprehensive list through our Yahoo Group. There will also be some changes. Because of lack of interest, Interest Group and Committee Chairs will be ad hoc and formed on an "as needed basis."

In May, our last general meeting of the season, we will host our 30th Anniversary end of the year blow out. All members are asked to sign up to bring finger foods or desserts. We will once again be inviting community members and former members who offer support to our organization. Please RSVP for this event so those who will be bringing dishes know how many will be in attendance.

May might be the last meeting of the season, but it's by no means the end of the fun. We're planning to have a Welcomers Club picnic in August to renew old ties, and invite new members to preview our wonderful group.

Finally, I'd like to thank Jean Trujillo for volunteering to take over the newsletter for the rest of this year and next. I'll still be posting updates to the blog, but maintaining the newsletter is taking more time than I can offer at the moment. Thanks Jean!

Wishing you the best spring has to offer,

Deb

A Message from Deb:

Whether our jobs involve taking care of household matters, working outside of the home, or both, we all work hard. Because of this, it's important for us to take some time now and then to pamper ourselves. This isn't always easy. Most of us tend to put our needs last as we do our best to make sure our families are happy. That's why this month's meeting is so important. This month is all about pampering and decadence. This month is all about taking time out to do something special for you. Celina and Bassama, our Programs committee, have worked overtime to come up with a wonderful evening!

Our friends at Hillsborough Massage Therapy are returning this year to tell us about the importance of taking time out for ourselves in the form of massage. In addition to learning a little about the art of massage, everyone in attendance will receive a ten minute chair massage. Does it get any better than this? Yes it does! We will also be enjoying some decadent desserts. from The Bent Spoon and Thomas Sweet in Princeton, and Basama's friend Rosalia is providing us with some wonderful home baked delicasies as well. Be forewarned, no diets are being honored on February 7th!

We'd also like as many members to attend as possible so a group photograph can be taken for our blog. Come on out, wear something vibrant for Valentine's Day and reward yourself!

We also have a few other awesome programs coming up this year. In March, we will be learning some incredible gift wrapping techniques and April will bring a digital camera workshop and slide show. April will also bring the elections for next years board members and committee chairs. May, our last meeting is our end of the year party. Don't miss this exciting event as we have some wonderful treats and entertainment planned.

Don't forget, our February meeting date has been changed to February 7th. I look forward to seeing you then!

That's not the end of it, however. There are still some other wonderful events to look forward to.

Ladies Gourmet – Celina will be telling everyone about Ladies Gourmet at the general meeting on February 7th. For those interested, there will be a brief meeting after our general meeting that night. It's time to choose teams and plan menus! I'm definitely looking forward to this!

Ladies Out to Dinner - Please join us on February 23rd (4th Thursday of every month) as we wine and dine at The Santa Fe Grill in Rocky Hill. I have a couple I like to throw out annually - losing weight and putting off procrastination are my personal favorites. I also like to add in a few new ones each year to make life interesting. For 2006 I vow to become more organized and to relax and enjoy life a bit more. 2005 was a busy year for me as I became immersed in my career and this wonderful group of women. As many of you know, I didn't plan on serving as your President and wasn't adequately prepared. I have no regrets, mind you. It's been a lot of fun. I'd like to thank all of you for making my job a pleasure instead of a chore, and for making me feel comfortable. You are all truly an extraordinary group of women!

2006 promises to be an exciting year for our members. Most of our interest groups are in full swing now and the rest are kicking into gear. In addition, we have some wonderful programs coming up. On Tuesday, January 10th we will be having our regift raffle. Bring in unwanted Christmas items or even items that have been languishing unopened in your closet for years. We'll raffle them off among our members. Remember, one woman's trash is another woman's treasure! All we ask is that the items haven't been used.

Also, Vicki Brody has graciously offered teach us all to play Bunko. I've never played Bunko before, but I'm looking forward to learning and I hope you are too! This promises to be an enjoyable evening for all.

For February we've scheduled an evening of indulgences. Our friends at Hillsborough Massage Therapy will be coming in and everyone receives a ten minute massage! In addition we will be enjoying some decadent desserts. I'm hoping we'll even have a surprise or two. Don't forget, our February meeting date has been rescheduled to take place on February 7th.

In March we will be electing our new board members for the 2006- 2007 season. If you're interested in serving on the board or chairing an interest group, let us know and we'll put your name on the ballot. I'd like to have ballots emailed before our March general meeting.

I hope to see you this Tuesday, January 10th!

Interest Groups:

Book Club - The first bookclub meeting is now scheduled for January 22 (Sunday) at 7 pm at Caffe Piazza (near Stop and Shop and Maggie Moos). Presents are being wrapped, trees and candles are being lit and the malls are jam packed with people. It's also time for another annual tradition – our holiday party. Good times will ensue as we play our holiday gift exchange game and eat some special treats. This is truly an event worth showing up for! Here are the details:

Holiday Gift Exchange – For those of you who haven't played before, all gifts are placed on the counter, and each member chooses a number. When your number is called, it's your turn to choose a gift from the pile. But wait…there's a twist! You have the option of stealing away another member's gift instead of choosing your own. It's a lot of fun watching coveted gifts make their rounds across the room. Don't worry though, everyone leaves with a gift!

The gift: Gifts should be inexpensive – about $10 to $15.00. If you're bringing a gift with a holiday theme, please wrap in holiday paper. This way, those ladies who don't celebrate a certain holiday won't pick an unwanted gift. If your gift doesn't have a holiday theme, it can be wrapped in generic wrapping.

Cookie Exchange – Those who are interested can take part in a cookie exchange. Here's how it works: Everyone who participates should bring in 6 packages filled with 6 cookies each. Your six packages will be exchanged for six other packages. Everyone will go home with 36 cookies. This isn't mandatory, but it's fun!

Food - Do you have a special treat you'd like to share? Each member is invited to bring an appetizer or dessert for our party.

Come as early as possible! The sooner we assemble, the sooner we can begin!

Now for the boring club business:

Interest Groups:

Rather than posting personal phone numbers on the Internet, I'll be sending a list of the Interest Group Leaders via our Yahoo Group. If you haven't heard yet from your Interest Group Chair, or if you'd like to join a particular group, feel free to contact her. You can also contact Anna O'Brien who runs Interest Groups this year.

I've been asked to remind you that in order to enjoy club sponsored special interest groups, please remember to send in your dues to keep your membership current. According to our bylaws participants in interest groups must be dues paying members. Please forward all membership forms and dues to Jean Trujillo.

Socials - The ADULT SOCIAL this year is looking for a few good homes! Anyone interested in getting together this year for a fun night out , please contact Lauri ASAP. Spouses are welcome to attend. If there is enough interest, we will meet in December, for a night on the town. Those who have a free Saturday on their calendars are welcome to give Lauri a call.

Book Group - The book club is having its first meeting on Sunday, 12/4 at 6 pm! We are meeting at Applebee's. Everyone should bring a book they enjoyed recently, or something they would like the group to read. If anyone wants to join us, email Teresa at teresa@grampage.com or call so we'll know to look for you.

Community Service – Please contact Brenda Emery to see what items still need to be purchased for our adopted family.

Ladies Gourmet - The teams for Ladies Gourmet don't usually get chosen until January, and the dinners aren't held until the spring, so there's still plenty of time to sign up. Contact Celina for details regarding Ladies Gourmet.

Movie Night – Per Lauri Loaiza, this year will kick off on December 20 in Hillsborough. Those interested can either call or email Lauri, or just show up at 7:00pm. Whoever shows up will choose the movie together. Afterwards we will head toApplebee's for a light discussion, or we might all go shopping!!

Interest Group updates will be added as they are received, so check this blog often.

Upcoming Events

December 4th – Book Club – First Meeting at 6:00 PM at Applebee's
December 13th – Holiday Party
December 20th – Movie Night – 7:00 PM – Hillsborough Cinema
January - 10th – General Meeting: Re-gift raffle, game night.
February 13th – General Meeting – Tentatively scheduled - evening of pampering and decadence.

We look forward to seeing you at our holiday party.

Until Then,

Deb

The Hillsborough-Montogmery Welcomers Club will be hosting a bake sale at the Sunnymead School Craft and Vendor Fair on Saturday, November 19th from 10:00 to 3:00.

Won't you come out and show your support for the Welcomers Club and the Community?

Message from the President

Deborah Ng

You can tell by the cooler nights and shorter days that summer is over and autumn has begun. We’re so fortunate to live in an area that comes alive during this time of year. There's pumpkin picking, apple picking, hay rides and the changing colors, but don't just take my word for it. Before she moved from the area, Lisa Goldberg was kind enough to arrange for a representative from the Somerset County Chamber of Commerce to come in and talk to us at our meeting on October 11th about some wonderful things to do in this area in the fall. Don’t miss it!

My goal for this year is to have us become more involved with the community. One of the ways we can do this is through our fundraisers. We have a couple of great fundraisers coming up in November. First and foremost is our annual Learning Express fundraiser on November 8, 9, and 10th. Mention the Hillsborough-Montgomery Welcomers Club and receive 10% off your purchase! Plus, ten percent of all those sales go to the club. It's a win-win situation! We’ll be sending flyers with more information as we get closer to the date. Please contact Lauri Loaiza with any questions.

We’re also looking for volunteers for a fundraiser scheduled for Saturday November 19th. The Welcomers Club will have a table at the Sunnymead School Vendor/Craft fair where we will be selling baked goods. Please sign up to either bake or donate something and/or work the table. You don't have to spend the whole day; an hour will do just fine. I’ll be setting out a sign-up sheet for this, but feel free to contact me with any questions.

Don't forget there are board positions and interest group chairs needing to be filled. This is a great way to get involved, why not sign up? We’re also open to suggestions for upcoming programs and fundraisers.

Membership – Our membership committee would like to stress the importance of registering for another year. In addition to all of the wonderful activities we have planned at our regular monthly meetings, members can partake in some of our offshoots such as Ladies Gourmet, Book Club and Movie Night, but not unless you’re a paying member. Without payment, your name and other details won’t be entered into our directory either. Don’t miss out on being a part of this important networking tool. Send payment to Jean Trujillo as soon as possible. For more information, please contact Mary Jeney.

Ways & Means –We’re hoping to plan plenty of fundraisers this year. Lauri Loaiza, this year’s committee chair, needs lots of help if we’re to pull off as many fundraisers as we'd like. Whether or not you’re experienced in the art of fundraising, we welcome your assistance and ideas. Please sign up or call Lauri for more details.

Newsletter – In order to save on postage and printing, it has been decided that we’re going to have an electronic newsletter each month, but send out a quarterly “dates to remember” newsletter. Unfortunately, time has become an issue and I can’t handle the quarterly newsletter, or maybe, even the monthly electronic newsletter. If you’re interested in taking over newsletter duties, please let me (Deborah Ng) know. Mostly, it involves compiling information given to you by representatives from each of the different committees and making sure business cards are prominently displayed.

Committee Chairs – Please let me know of any news or upcoming events for your committees.

Upcoming Dates:

October 11 – General Meeting – Things to do in Somerset County in the fall
November 8 – General Meeting – Faux Painting Lesson
November 8, 9, 10 – Learning Express Fundraiser
November 19 – Bake Sale Fundraiser
December 13th – Holiday party and Gift Exchange

General Meeting Information – Meetings are held the second Tuesday of every moth at the Nassau Tennis Center.

Yahoo Group - If you haven't already signed up for our Yahoo group, please do so. If you have questions or need assistance, feel free to contact me at deborahng@patmedia.net

Birthdays:

Happy belated birthday to those we missed in September!

Cindy Norfleet 9/6
Sue Todesco 9/15
Dana Brazer 9/18
Krasi Hristov 9/22
Donna McLouglin 9/27
Susan Laskoff oct 12
Lelly Latek oct 28
Debbie Valazza oct 22

Nassau Tennis Club

The Nassau Tennis Club is located on 12 wooded acres in Skillman, Montgomery Township, NJ.
